Windows Estate puts picnics on the Margaret River map

Margaret River ups its picnic game with a new kind of food and wine tasting experience at Windows Estate.

Forget popping in for a quick tasting, you’ll want to set aside an entire afternoon when you visit Windows Estate.

The family-owned winery in the Margaret River region’s north has long held a reputation for doing things properly. Owners Chris and Joanne Davies focus on traditional methods of wine production.

Working small scale, by hand, the proof is certainly in the award-winning drops, and now in a brandnew offering of experiences that bring food and a sense of place to the fore.

When COVID-19 restrictions hit Margaret River, wine tastings couldn’t take place without the serving of food. Luckily, Jo had been working on a new picnic offering that elevates the humble cheese platter to serious new heights.

Windows Estate Styled Picnics

Guests can now book in for a ‘Styled Picnic’ on the banks of the winery dam or on the cellar door’s manicured lawn. Think round woven rugs, throw cushions, low line tables and umbrellas. There’s even a fire pit if you want one.

There are three varieties of picnic boxes to choose from, Cheese & Charcuterie, Vegetarian and Vegan. Each box is jam-packed with locally sourced goodies, many made on site by Jo and her team. There are small tubs of spirulina basil pesto and macadamia and beetroot hummus, containers filled with pickled cucumber, relish and carrot jam.

Baguettes from local favourites Yallingup Woodfired Bread, creamy brie from Cambray Cheese and sausage from Beef by the Reef are not to be missed either. Add in a wine tasting flight or a bottle to share, and you’re sorted.

The boxes are generous serves, but you’ll also want to stop by the cellar door fridge to stock up on extras for your accommodation fridge. Alternatively, you can also make up your own picnic box from the goods in the cellar door.

It’s worth perusing the shelves too. Jo handpicks local designers, artists and ceramists in a very stylish curation of gifts you won’t want to skip.
