Inside Vietnam’s new opera-themed hotel: Capella Hanoi

Expectations were high for Vietnam’s Capella Hanoi.

Designed by the illustrious architect Bill Bensley, the luxury hotel follows in the footsteps of his previous work for Capella Ubud, Bali –  which has since been rated the number one hotel in the world in 2020 by Travel + Leisure.

Now, with its doors open, we can finally reveal what to expect during a stay at Capella Hanoi.

The 47-bedroom luxury hotel sits just steps away from the iconic Hanoi Opera House in Vietnam and the theme of opera runs through its veins.

The vision was to create a Petite Auberge during the halcyon days of opera. Inspired by what could have been a rendezvous spot for opera’s greatest artists, singers, composers, stage and costume designers after the final curtain call in the Roaring 20s.

Stylish interiors

Each suite alludes to the tales of the mischievous opera society, told through over a thousand pieces of operatic memorabilia and custom portraiture art by prolific artist Kate Spencer.

Throughout the hotel’s corridors and shared spaces is a curation of set designs, opera costumes and vintage tableware. This extends into Capella Hanoi’s signature restaurant, Backstage, serving up Northern Vietnam cuisine with modern culinary techniques.

Paying homage to famous female artists of the era such as Anna Held and Coco Chanel is the Diva’s Lounge. Here, guests can savour bespoke cocktails, Vietnamese-inspired tapas and artistic desserts in sophisticated Art Deco surrounds.

These experiences are called ‘Capella Moments’ and include a curation of on-site programmes and rituals which celebrate heritage, craftsmanship and gastronomy.

At Capella Hanoi, guests can partake in a range of activities hosted in The Living Room. These include weaving a bamboo and rattan bag with a third-generation craftsman or discovering the history of dó paper – bamboo paper developed in local villages.

Those who are keen on venturing out into the city can enjoy the Capella Curates program – a selection of bespoke experiences that provide a glimpse into the soul of Hanoi.

For instance, ‘Lacquer Your Life’ gives guests an opportunity to learn Vietnamese lacquer painting from one of Hanoi’s most famous lacquer painting masters. While ‘Hanoi Spirit’ invites guests to explore the country’s only gin distillery and infuse their own gin using local botanicals.
