The world’s best airports for 2020 have been announced

It’s been a little bit of doom and gloom for airports these days. So in some brighter news, Skytrax has announced the winners of the World Airport Awards 2020.

Taking the crown for the ‘World’s Best Airport’ is Singapore Changi Airport for the eighth year in a row. In second place was Tokyo Haneda Airport, followed by Doha’s Hamad International Airport in third. Also creeping into the top ten this year was Amsterdam Schiphol Airport which jumped from 14 in 2019 to 9th in 2020, while London Heathrow went from being 8th last year to 12th place this year.

Notably, four of the top ten airports were located in Japan. Tokyo Haneda Airport – which ranked 2nd in the top 10 – was also awarded the ‘World’s Best Domestic Airport’ and ‘World’s Cleanest Airport’. Meanwhile, Japan’s Osaka’s Kansai International Airport was awarded ‘World’s Best Airport Staff Service,’ and the fabulously ninja-themed Chūbu Centrair International Airport in Nagoya won the ‘World’s Best Regional Airport’ prize once again.

The awards, voted for by customers from more than 100 different countries in a customer satisfaction survey, were initially scheduled to take place on 1 April at the Passenger Terminal Expo in Paris. However, due to COVID-19, the 2020 award ceremony instead took place live on Youtube on 10 May.

“Having deferred the award announcements for nearly six weeks, we felt it was now right to try and bring some cheer into the airport industry in these difficult times,” said Edward Plaisted, CEO of Skytrax, in a statement.

It’s no surprise to see Changi Airport in the number one position. The airport was already ranked highly by passengers but after the launch of Jewel Changi Airport in 2019 it jumped a level ahead yet again. The new complex features an impressive collection of shops, and hospitality services as well as an expansive indoor garden and the world’s tallest indoor waterfall –  the 40-meter-high HSBC Rain Vortex – which is almost as much of a tourist attraction as the city itself.

“Changi Airport is humbled to receive this affirmation from our travellers, made possible by the strong support from our airport partners,” said Lee Seow Hiang, Chief Executive Officer of Changi Airport Group in a pre-recorded clip played at the online ceremony.
