Fun for the family in Sabah with Shangri-La
Shangri-La’s Rasa Ria Resort and Spa is located on the Pantai Dalit Beach in the Malaysian state, Sabah. They’ve recently launched new guest experiences alongside the redevelopment of the 64-acre Rasa Ria Reserve. The focus is on families with conservation and education programmes to get the kids close to nature. A variety of active scenic walking trails leads guests to the Discovery Centre, Ria Resort Lookout, Canopy Walkway, Waterfall Garden Area and Adventure Point Playground.
The Rasa Ria Reserve is managed by Shangri-La and was established in 1996 to protect endangered areas and species who call Sabah their homes. Since its establishment, Shangri-La has made developments in protecting the native landscape and has brought long-term benefits to the natural surrounds and the guest.
The Discovery Centre is a great place to learn more about the native flora and fauna of the Malaysian landscape. Guests can learn about the indigenous long-tailed macaques, western tarsiers, bearcats and the slow loris. There are also over 100 species of butterflies, pangolins and heaps of native plants. The Discovery Centre also serves as the gateway to the Rasa Ria Reserve.
Inside the Rasa Ria Reserve is six unique trails which stretch to just over eight kilometres of through the Malaysian jungle. Each trail takes about two hours and is filled with exploration. Guests will get opportunities to see local wildlife and try to spot nocturnal animals having their midday naps. Other animals will wander freely around the reserve where they will take feed and water.
The summit of the Reserve is home to the Ria Lookout with views of Mount Kinabalu and the Tambalang River. With the redevelopment of the reserve the lookout has doubled in size. Continental breakfast is served for early-risers looking to catch the sunrise over the Reserve.
Additionally, there are great activities for the kids. Adventure Point is home to play sculptures, net tunnels, zip lines, a tree trunk climbing zone, a basket swing, and a sandpit. A favourite amongst guests is the “Ranger for the Day” experience which allows children to feed animals and help monitor plants and wildlife whilst they learn about the jungle.
Shangri-La offers a Family Fun package which includes a buffet breakfast and dinner, free 1-hour bicycle rides, free admission to Adventure Point and a 15% discount on selected spa treatments alongside accommodation.
Shangri-La’s Rasa Resort & Spa, Kota Kinabalu is situated on hundreds of acres of land, lined by two rivers. Together, the Garden Wing and the Ocean Wing offer 499 guestrooms which are inspired by the surrounding lush gardens and the sunny shore respectively.
