The glass-bottomed pool with 152-metre vertical views down to the Indian Ocean at The Edge in Uluwatu seems to have been designed with Instagrammers in mind. But the infinity-edged pool perched like an eyrie over the clifftop is not the only drawcard at this exclusive hideaway located in the southernmost tip of Bali. In fact, each and every detail at The Edge was designed with ‘over-the-top’ indulgence in mind – from the sumptuous villas to the warm Balinese hospitality to the oneeightyº dining view.
The three-hectare property, which opened in 2011, features just six villas all clustered on the clifftop with dazzlingly tropical gardens all around. If we had an entourage, we’d stay at The View, which has five bedrooms, two natural stone pools, an expansive dining room, eight-seat cinema, children’s playroom and vast tropical garden.
But given there are just the four of us, we’re content at The Shore, comprising two large bedrooms, a separate living and dining area, infinity plunge pool and private library/office. Our 1400 sq. m villa even has a butler on hand 24/7 to deliver our breakfast, make us endless cups of tea, fluff our pillows and chauffeur us to and from the local surf breaks.
Although the decor at The Edge nods to Bali – all contemporary Indonesian artworks, Ironwood floorboards and teak accessories – the arrangement of the rooms feels infinitely more European. And while the bathrooms offer a touch of lavishness – with Les Notes de Lanvin accessories, in-room Jacuzzis and rainstorm shower heads – it’s worth booking in for a crème hair bath at the Spa so you will be looking your best when you pose for that money shot on Instagram.
