Switzerland's pop-up hotels

Switzerland Tourism has sought out eleven sensational and unique locations for visitors to spend the night in a range of pop-up hotels over the European summer.

Accommodations range from historic towers to floating boathouses and are serviced by some of the finest hotels in Switzerland.

Spread across eleven major cities, the pop-up hotels promise visitors a one-of-a-kind stay in unusual urban locations, encouraging travellers to go off the beaten track—an experience Switzerland Tourism’s research finding reveal more travellers are seeking.

Highlights include the Seehotel Kastanienbaum in Lucerne, a private boathouse offering a tranquil lakeside hideaway. The captain will sail you smoothly down the river and you can even request butler service with a romantic barbecue dinner. In the morning, enjoy a lavish breakfast on the private terrace.

The City Tower in Baden, which is a 15th century, 56-metre-high historic fortification originally part of the city’s Northern defences, is offering an overnight stay in an original prison cell with easy access to the old town of Baden.

A fishing cabin on the banks of the Rhine in Basel offers a night in a cabin that few get the chance to experience due to private ownership and lack of public access. With a focus on the simplicity of being offline, visitors can fully immerse into the experience with the intentionally simple cabin that features divine views of Switzerland’s cultural capital. There is no electricity or running water, bringing an authentic and traditional aspect to the stay. The opportunity to spend a day fishing with an experienced fisherman is also on offer.

If you fancy a more luxurious stay, inclusive of WiFi and saunas, Vevey’s old ballroom might be the place for you. Breakfast in bed complements the artistic and luxurious space that is crammed full of selected photographs, artworks, plants and fashion and surrounded by the collection of Boutique Bravo!, a Swiss concept store.

For the most romantic of stays, nothing is comparable to a night in the middle of the Beau-Rivage Palace Gardens. Picture a sundrenched glass pavilion decked out in delicious textiles and fresh flowers. The guest room is reminiscent of a cubby house for royals and is located right in the middle of the sweeping four-hectare garden.

Part of the Swiss Urban Feel movement, the pop-up hotels will only be available for three months this European Summer, ending in August.
