Somphet Market, Chiang Mai, Thailand

Tuck into the bustling Somphet Market for a taste of the city’s finest khao kha moo (stewed pork shank) and khaep mu, otherwise known as Thai pork scratchings; these airy, crunchy bites are deep-fat fried with cloves, garlic and herbs, and serve to counter the pungent nature of the stew. Keep plenty of spicy nam chim dipping sauce handy, and munch as you browse from stall to stall, revelling in the heady fragrance of wok vapours and tuk-tuk fumes. This is an excellent market to gather flowers, textiles, and random bric-a-brac you probably don’t need, but will have a grand old time buying.
