With masses of light fluffy powder snow, Utah is a skiers paradise in any year. But the 2022 Utah ski season looks like it might just be the best ski season in a decade.
Utah’s Alta Ski Area recorded a whopping 67″ (1.6m) of snow during October 2021 and nearby Solitude Mountain Resort, in Big Cottonwood Canyon, reported 63″ (1.6m).
The last time Utah had this much snow in October was in 2004. And that season (2004-05) was the snowiest Utah has ever had.
So if you’ve been dreaming of a USA ski trip, now might just be the time to book.
The best snow on earth
Utah’s snow is so good, they’ve trademarked the phrase “Home to The Greatest Snow on Earth®”.
And they’ve backed that claim with science. University of Utah atmospheric scientist Jim Steenburgh studied the consistency of Utah’s snow and found it was the best in the world for deep-powder skiing and riding. It comes down to a quality called “flotation”.
Flotation happens when light snow has enough body to keep skis and snowboards on the upper layer of snow without scraping the base. That makes it feel like you are floating across the powder. In most resorts, that happens on some days. In Utah, it’s the rule rather than the exception.
Endless pockets of powder are just the start. Utah will also wow you with snowy red rock views in the national parks and monuments a short drive further south.
The easiest way for Australians to ski Utah
International travel has resumed from NSW and Victoria and vaccinated travellers are free to enter the USA without quarantine. You can book the accommodation and the flights and the COVID tests yourself. But trust us, you want someone to get you organised. It will make your life and your holiday a lot easier.
Mogul Ski World is one of the best travel companies to use to book a Utah ski trip in 2022. The company has more than 40 years of experience in organising personalised, extraordinary travel experiences. And they’re experts in USA ski trips.
They handle all the details for you, you just need to tell them what you need. That’s particularly helpful right now as Australians need to navigate a lot more paperwork to travel overseas.
And when we say ALL the details, we mean it.
“We can even organise to put a Christmas tree in your apartment if you are staying over Christmas,” Felicity Moss said.
Australians who book a Utah ski trip with Mogul Ski World before 31 December 2021 can also go in the running to win three vouchers worth $2500 each to spend on brand new ski gear.
Where to ski in Utah
Utah has 10 ski resorts within an hour’s drive from Salt Lake City International Airport. You can choose to stay and ski one resort, or road trip between them all if you have more time.
The resorts fit into four distinct regions: Cottonwood Canyon, Park City, Ogden and Provo’s.
Park City, Utah Ski Resorts
Park City Mountain is perhaps the most famous of Utah’s ski resorts. It is the largest lift-served ski resort in the United States and has excellent ski schools and terrain parks.
Deer Valley has an incredible ski school, the best grooming in Utah and fantastic dining. Woodward Park City is the United State’s first “all-in-one action sports and ski resort”. It has training facilities that run all year round.
Cottonwood Canyon Resorts
Alta Ski Area has a reputation for powder, snowfall and a “skiiers only traditional attitude”.
Brighton Ski Resort draws crowds for its thrilling terrain park, accessible backcountry, masses of snow and family deals.
Snowbird is one of the best resorts for deep powder snow, steep terrain and stunning views.
Solitude Mountain is the least crowded of the Cottonwood Utah ski resorts and a local favourite for chutes and groomers.
Ogden Ski Resorts
Ogden isn’t as well known as the other ski areas, but it is certainly just as good.
Powder Mountain has an abundance of terrain, uncrowded slopes, Cat skiing and a seriously chilled apres attitude.
Nordic Valley in Ogden has incredible night skiing, it’s affordable and it’s a really great place for beginners to learn.
Snowbasin is the place to go for luxury lodges, Olympic quality downhill runs and high-end dining.
Provo’s Ski Resorts
Provos is home to Sundance Mountain Resort, a rustic ski resort built by actor Robert Redford. It has 50 runs across 500 acres and a new high-speed quad lift the toe Mandan Summit. Many of the trails at Sundance have names drawn from famous Redford films, but it’s also popular for wide backcountry trails and snowshoeing.
