Abu Dhabi is becoming known for its architectural and cultural marvels – with the Louvre and the Guggenheim both opening in 2017.
There is one building that takes your breath away in this progressive city – The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque. This work of art is one of the world’s largest mosques, with 82 domes, more than 1,000 columns, 24-carat gold gilded chandeliers and the world’s largest hand-knotted carpet.
The mosque can hold 40,000 worshippers. The main prayer hall is dominated by one of the world’s largest chandeliers and the exterior is quite striking with its white and gold colours reflected in the pools surrounding this ornate building. A great time to go is for the Sunset Tour at 5pm. The mosque is open daily to visitors, but is closed on Friday mornings.
