1. Lavender
You probably know lavender is commonly used for relaxation. But did you know it slows down the nervous system and decreases heart rate and blood pressure?

2. Ylang ylang
Here’s one you probably haven’t heard of. Ylang ylang (pronounced ee-lang ee-lang) comes from the Cananga tree native to Asian and South Pacific rainforests. It is especially fragrant and known for its sedative effects.

3. Cedarwood
This essential oil contains cedrol, which has sedative effect. This makes it useful for occasional bouts of insomnia.
Moreover, a small study showed that when placed on pillows of adults with dementia, the participants slept longer and were less likely to experience early morning awakening.

4. Clary sage
Clary sage reduces the levels of hormones associated with stress, anxiety, and alertness, such as cortisol. It can even have an antidepressant effect.

5. Chamomile
If you’ve been dealing with insomnia for any amount of time, there’s a good chance that someone has suggested you drink a cup of chamomile tea.
While that can be beneficial, you may find the oil even more effective. It calms anxiety and improves vital signs. Not only will this scent help you sleep it will help you stay asleep by reducing the occurrence of nightmares.

How to make your own pillow mist spray
Combine half a cup of water, half a teaspoon of witch hazel and four to five drops of your favourite essential oil in a spray bottle and shake it up. Gently spray the mist over your pillows before bedtime.
