The Rijksmuseum will unveil High Society on 8 March, 2018. The exhibition will present 35 life-sized portraits by some of the great masters including Cranach, Velázquez, Rembrandt and Monet.
The centrepiece of the exhibition is the wedding portraits of Marten Soolmans and Oopjen Coppit painted by Rembrandt just after the couple’s wedding in 1964. Back in those days, royals, aristocrats and the rich had themselves rendered in life-sized works by the world’s best artists, wearing their full regalia. The portraits of Soolmans and Coppit are great examples of this: they are more than two metres high.
Paintings for this exhibition have been loaned by museums such as the Louvre, Musée d’Orsay, Prado, Tate and Uffizi.
High Society will run until 3 June, 2018.
