Unlike most people, I actually look forward to the long flight from Sydney to Dallas Fort Worth on the A380 with Qantas, especially if I am lucky enough to score a points upgrade, which I do, more often than not.
I find it relaxing and love being able to watch movies back to back, sleep in the lie-flat bed and basically chill out. This flight is no different. The upgrade fairy came through, and I am in position – Qantas PJ’s on, mattress on the seat and entertainment screen in place – as soon as the seatbelt pings off.
I always love a window seat on the A380s as you get more storage, so I pack a laptop, which I never use but always intend to, books and handbag in the side storage.
Although I had enjoyed a snack or three in the Qantas Business Class lounge, I happily select my choices for the meals on board just after boarding, and, as usual, the Neil Perry-inspired dishes don’t disappoint. Nor do the wines I choose to complement my lunch.
Once the dining setting is cleared away, I recline the seat and get straight into movie mode. With more than 150 choices as well as 700 TV programs there is plenty to choose from.
As I am heading to Boston I watch Patriots Day (tissues required), followed by John Wick 2 and a few others that I watched in a half-asleep state after I put the bed in full recline mode, massage button on. A decent five-hour sleep ensures I have time to catch up on Modern Family over breakfast, meet up with a friend in the lounge for a chat, and prepare for the landing at DFW.
I emerge into the Texas sun rearing to go for the next leg to Boston’s Logan Airport, with a short stint in the American Airlines lounge in between.
The verdict: Great flight, great crew and cheers to the upgrade fairy.
