Qantas is giving people the chance to admire the next supermoon with a one-off scenic flight this month.
Set to appear on May 26, 2021, the next supermoon will be the last and biggest one for the year, coming about 100 miles closer to Earth.
It will also coincide with a full lunar eclipse, making it a rare double phenomenon. During this, the moon is expected to turn red against the night sky.
To mark the occasion, Qantas will operate a three-hour scenic flight on one of its Boeing 787 Dreamliners, with large windows ideal for moon gazing.
The Qantas supermoon flight will depart from Sydney and begin with a flyover of the Harbour before climbing to an altitude of 43,000 feet for supermoon and lunar eclipse viewing.
The moon will be at its closest point, coming within 357,311 kilometres of Earth at 11.50am AEST on May 26.
The total lunar eclipse will occur between 9.11pm and 9.25pm AEST, when the moon is 357,462 km from earth.
CSIRO astronomer Dr Vanessa Moss will work with the pilots to design the optimal flight path. She will also be on board to provide insights into all things space and astronomy.
Passengers can also expect Cosmic cocktails and supermoon cakes on the inflight menu.

Qantas supermoon flight the latest from its unique flight series
With limited travel options during the pandemic, Qantas has continued to keep travellers intrigued with their series of unique flights.
Prior to their supermoon flight, the airline recently launched mystery flights, which “sold out within 15 minutes,” according to Stephanie Tully, Qantas chief customer officer.
“We are very excited to now be doing a supermoon scenic flight, ” Tully added.
“We think this flight has great appeal for anyone with a passion for astronomy, science, space photography, aviation or just keen to do something a little ‘out of this world’.”
Another once-in-a-lifetime experience from Qantas is their Antarctica Flights. This one-day trip offers Aussies the chance to fly to Antarctica and back in a day and marvel at this frozen continent from above.
