andBeyond opens its first lodge in Asia

Set to open in September 2023, this exquisite lodge promises an unforgettable escape to one of the world’s most breathtaking destinations.

The enchanting andBeyond Punakha River Lodge is a haven nestled in the pristine landscapes of the Himalayan kingdom of Bhutan. The lodge embraces Bhutan‘s timeless charm and spiritual essence amidst the picturesque Punakha Valley, offering a seamless blend of luxury, tranquillity, and cultural immersion. 

Surrounded by lush forests, cascading rivers, and awe-inspiring mountain vistas, the lodge provides an idyllic retreat for nature enthusiasts, and those seeking respite from the bustling world.

A harmonious fusion of Bhutanese meets modernism

Situated on the banks of the Mo Chu River in the Punakha Valley, the lodge will feature six tented suites, as well as a two-bedroom villa with a private pool and a one-bedroom villa. Both which boasts a plunge pool/hot tub, depending on the season. 

Designed with a harmonious fusion of traditional Bhutanese architecture and contemporary comforts, the Punakha River Lodge reflects the region’s rich cultural heritage. Each crafted suite showcases a warm, inviting ambience with intricate Bhutanese craftsmanship and modern amenities. With panoramic windows, guests can relish sweeping views of the valley, immersing themselves in the raw beauty of the surroundings.

Beyond the luxurious accommodations

The lodge offers a range of bespoke experiences to discover Bhutan’s treasures. Engage in guided hikes to sacred monasteries, witness vibrant festivals, and partake in traditional cooking classes. Or simply find solace in the lodge’s serene spa.

The lodge draws inspiration from its natural surroundings and combines traditional Bhutanese style with a unique twist. Safari-style tented suites are suspended from a conventional Bhutanese timber structure. Decorative painted and gilded details appear in the woodwork, particularly in the bathrooms, which feature elegant brass-cladded bathtubs. The blue poppy, the national flower of Bhutan, also appears as a recurring theme woven throughout the interior design. 

Handwoven Bhutanese wool products are used as upholstery, linen detailing and blankets. Combining to bring a bold and bright colour and texture to the simple and unpretentious design. Warm and soulful, the overall feeling is a sense of peace and well-being, combined with a genuine sense of place.  

Boasting uninterrupted views of the Himalayas

The lodge site offers easy and unrivalled access to the Khamsum Yuelley Namgyal Chorten, which is a significant drawcard for visitors to Punakha. A suspension bridge leads over the river, and several walking trails are nearby. The riverside setting is ideal for al fresco lunches and beach activities, such as yoga, massages and swimming.  With a variety of activities including cycling, river rafting and kayaking and nature hikes and birding opportunities.  

Exclusive experiences include paddy field lunches, surprise drinks stops and picnic lunches with unique river views. An extensive organic vegetable garden demonstrates the company’s dedication to sourcing local, sustainably grown ingredients. Guests will also have the opportunity to visit a community farming project nearby.
