The showstopper

The lobby lounge features a striking sandstone wall punctuated with commissioned paintings by various acclaimed artists, including award-winning Aboriginal Australian artist Gloria Petyarre. The sense of discovery continues at lift lobby lounges on every floor featuring unmistakable Australian landscape pieces by Archibald-prize-winning artist John Olsen AO OBE. These hybrid zones feature custom furniture that supports mixed use of the space as a place to study, enjoy after-dinner cocktails or read a book.

Green thumbs up

Accor’s Plant for the Planet program persuades guests staying more than one night to reuse their bath towels. The program is unique because hotels donate half their laundry budget savings to finance reforestation projects. You will be provided with glass bottles in your room throughout your stay and will find still and sparkling water stations available throughout the hotel and restaurant. The sustainably-minded hotel is entirely free of single-use plastics, and an emphasis is placed on selecting local providers where possible and ethically sourcing all produce. Charging stations for electric vehicles are also available in the hotel car park.

The family factor

Location is key for families. Everything is close and within walking distance, with many food choices at your doorstep that allow varied choices and budget options. The rooms are incredibly spacious for families. The suite I stayed in had an adjoining door to another room to allow for larger families.

Beyond the rooms

Bringing a new level of excellence to Western Sydney’s dining scene is Marcel Bar and Bistro and lobby bar Tori. On the first floor, atop a sweeping central staircase, Marcel makes an immediate impression with a Bauhaus-inspired design in subdued primary colours and sleek shapes. The modern European restaurant offers a refined but welcoming atmosphere with elegant dishes celebrating the area’s abundant produce.

Tori, on the ground floor, is a contemporary take on a traditional lobby bar, offering all-day light bites, brews from local coffee bean roasters and pastries for breakfast before morphing to a live music and evening drinks spot with a Blue Mountains backdrop.

Dish to dine for

Marcel Bar and Bistro is a MUST during your stay. A hotel’s onsite restaurant is only sometimes the hero of my stay. The upscale new Western Sydney restaurant pays homage to the region’s produce.

We knew we were in for a dining experience when we were offered their signature “Thinking Martini” to sip on while we made our meal choices. Note – perfect service is as essential to Marcel as its menu, with several dishes finished and served at the table for a dash of showmanship and attentive, intuitive staff, ensuring every guest shares a sense of luxurious ease.

Within a short walk, you can find…

Soon, Sydney’s NEW international airport will be only a short 15-minute drive away. However, for now, it’s the ultimate location for entertainment and sports. Located at the foot of the spectacular Blue Mountains and only a short train trip or drive to Sydney Harbour, it is the perfect location for anyone wanting to leave the city but still be close enough to explore.

I wish I could take home…

The shower was outstanding. If I wasn’t mindful of water wastage, I could have stayed there all day. The Australian-born Hunter Lab hair products were so good that I purchased them online.

Amenity game

All rooms offer impeccable natural skincare amenities from Australian-born Hunter Lab, Nespresso coffee machines and an array of local minibar inclusions: Manly Spirits, Nick O’Leary Wines, Belle Fleur Chocolates and Strangelove Soda. Foxtel Business IQ is available for entertainment and has a library of over 1,000 free movies.

Before booking…

As the area grows, this hotel will become even more popular, so I recommend booking in advance. Also, calling ahead and checking if they have any conferences during your stay, as parking and room availability will be at a premium.

Insiders’ tips

Pullman Penrith is part of the Accor group, which offers members incredible discounts when booking directly. Next time – and there will 100% be a next time – I would look at staying a couple of nights to allow full use of all the amenities this property offers.

Spa life

The elite fitness and wellness centre, developed in league with the High-Performance team from the Penrith Panthers, is bound to challenge the everyday norms of any hotel gym. Warm and cold sweat towels are available for guests during their workouts. There’s also a custom, in-built 10-person sauna for respite and recovery.

V&T expert rating of Pullman Sydney Penrith
