It is the start of winter and I am staying at the Pullman Sydney Hyde Park as part of its Vivid Accommodation Package. The package includes parking, breakfast and a colourful cocktail and sliders to enjoy before exploring the lights. The hotel is located right across from Hyde Park, near Oxford Street. The 241 rooms and suites have fantastic views and my 20th-floor abode offers sweeping views of Hyde Park and the CBD including Sydney Tower Eye. Pullman Sydney Hyde Park has a spectacular rooftop pool and recreation deck, excellent on-site dining, and ten meeting spaces.

The family factor
Families love Pullman Sydney Hyde Park. The main reason being Candy Hour which happens every day during school holidays and on Fridays and Saturdays outside of the holidays. From 3pm to 4pm a crisp white hawkers cart is filled with jars of lollies and guests can fill a cup of cherry red gummies, soft pink jellybeans, rainbow snakes, lollipops and more. The hotel has a heated outdoor pool on the top level, and even though it’s winter, the pool is warm enough for kids to splashing about into the evening. Families can choose from rooms with either two double or two queen beds. 11am checkout is standard so there’s plenty of time for a lazy morning enjoying the buffet breakfast or having a last swim in the pool.
Deluxe rooms at Pullman Sydney Hyde Park
I am staying in the 32-square-metre Deluxe Hyde Park Room, with a king bed, lounge and work area. The highlight is Hyde Park views framed in oversized windows. Being on the 20th floor, we can see all of Hyde Park and most of the CBD. The room has a Nespresso machine, wireless charginfg hub, TV and Bluetooth speaker. The minibar has Dilma tea and the drinks are all in cans to reduce waste. It’s a great initiative but canned wine without a wine glass available is not for me! It is great to see a hotel committing to no single-use plastics.

The bathroom has a dark marble vanity, a shower over a triangular bathtub and refillable amenities from C.O Bigelow. I make a beeline to the bath on my arrival, it’s quick to fill and as I’m soaking in the spacious tub I ponder if a bath before dinner should become my new ritual.

Dinner at Windows on the Park
As of May 18, Windows on the Park launched a new dinner menu. Open for dinner from Thursday to Saturday, Windows on the Park is the perfect spot for a romantic dinner. The restaurant’s floor-to-ceiling windows offer stunning views of Hyde Park. Tables for two with white tablecloths are set under the big windows and we take in the views while we try the three-course menu.

We start with spinach and ricotta tortellini sitting on creamy puree baby carrot topped with grana padano and mico herbs and Moroccan spiced pork belly, presented beautifully on a swath of beetroot hummus with nuts, sprouts apple and pomegranate. The Humpty Doo barramundi is the dish to dine for, and quite possibly the best barramundi I have ever had. It is served on mashed potato with edamame, pickled cauliflower, radish and a drizzle of salsa verde. The Grainge 180gm MSA beef tenderloin is melt-in-your-mouth tender, especially with the jus accompanying the dish in a small gravy pitcher. The mushrooms are also meaty and delicious. Desert is the chef’s signature kaffir lime pannacotta and Melting chocolate cake. The lime flavour is bold and perfectly offset with fresh berries and biscuit crumble.

Bar Thirty6
We visit Bar THIRTY6 as part of the Vivid Package for a Vivid cocktail and beef sliders. The cocktail choices are bright blue ‘Bronte Beach’ made with rum and Blue Curacao, ‘Golden Passion’ with tequila and mango or ‘Pink Lake‘ with gin and Campari. I sink into a dark green velvet chair and enjoy the Hyde Park views while sipping a Pink Lake cocktail. The bar has a relaxed atmosphere and most of the guests are here for a pre-dinner drink before dinner reservations or to head out to Vivid.

Beyond the rooms
The rooftop recreation deck is where you’ll want to head on a sunny day, its home to one of the only hotel rooftop pools in Sydney. Sit in a sun lounger by the heated pool and take in views that stretch to Sydney Harbour. You’ll also find the gym, spa and sauna here.

Insiders’ tips
Request a room on the highest floor possible and facing Hyde Park for the best views and check the hotel’s offer page. Pullman Sydney Hyde Park often has special promotions and packages.
If only…
The property wasn’t rated five-star. Although the property falls short of its five-star rating, it remains a charming Sydney hotel that aligns reasonably with its price point.
