The Plain of Jars in Phonsavan, Laos has always been shrouded in mystery. Archaeologists simply don’t know how these giant stone jars that scatter the plains of the Xiangkhoang Plateau got there or what their purpose was. Some of the jars are as big as three metres tall and one metre wide. So what were they used for?
Opinions range from burial sites and funeral rites prior to cremation to holding whisky for a local giant. Laos is a simply delightful country to visit with so much to offer including World Heritage towns, spectacular waterfalls, limestone karsts, lush jungle, gorgeous people and of course the jars.
Few travellers make it to the part of Laos where the jars reside as it is a lengthy detour from the main tourist spots of Luang Prabang and Vientiane. The drive there, while long, is well worth it for the scenery alone with private car the best way of getting there.
