Muara Kuin is one of the oldest markets in Indonesia – some suggest it has been around for more than 400 years – and easily one of the most beautiful. All the action takes place on the river, with vendors in hand-carved wooden boats known as jukung; these boats are often more than a half century old. Expect to see a wide array of fruits and vegetables, as well as some flowers, handicrafts, and small trinkets. This is as authentic a floating market experience as anywhere in the world.
