Macao celebrates 20th anniversary in 2019

If you’re visiting Macao this year, you’re in for a treat. 2019 marks the 20th anniversary of the region being returned to China from Portuguese control, which means celebrations abound.

The annual Macao International Fireworks Display Contest will run from 7 September to 5 October, with a series of breathtaking and spectacular displays on show. Head to the waterfront near the Macau Tower for the best vantage points.

Impressive firework displays will continue on 20 December, the date of the handover in 1999, as well as traditional New Year fireworks on 31 December.

But it’s not only epic light shows in Macao for the rest of the year; they’re also hosting a series of major events and festivals for the rest of 2019. These include the five-month long Art Festival, which ends on 31 October; the 19th Macao Food Festival from 8 – 24 November; Macao International Parade in December and much more.

“Anyone who plans to visit Macao before the end of the year can expect some special moments during the year-long 20th anniversary celebrations,” said Helen Wong, general manager of the Macao Government Tourism Office (Australia and New Zealand).

“In line with Macao’s designation as a UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy, the mouth-watering Macanese cuisine will be highlighted at the many festivals.”
