As our helicopter sweeps around the Malolo Island’s headland and descends toward Likuliku Lagoon Resort’s spectacular turquoise waters, our uber-efficient mode of transport heightens our sense of arrival and much-anticipated visit. All guests are met at reception with an infectious Bula greeting song and this is where the ubiquitous Fijian charm begins. The South Pacific islands are a ‘quintessential paradise’ and Likuliku Lagoon Resort has lassoed this experience, as the first and only Fijian property with alluring over-water bures. With 10 in total, or a choice of beautiful Beachfront and Deluxe Beachfront (add a private plunge pool) bures to choose from, each option over delivers.
If real estate is all about location, then Likuliku – meaning ‘calm waters’ – is ahead of the game with a truly magical setting. The Over-water bures topped with thatched roofs sit on soldier-straight legs, boast large decks and sun beds, a separate bathing pavilion with a shower and bathtub delivering spectacular views and stair access to the water’s edge for easy snorkelling. The bures on the island, nestling amongst postcard greenery, are also quite stunning with rolling green hills tucked in behind, and flat or hillside walking tracks for the adventurous.
All levels of accommodation are ‘pacific contemporary’ and fresh, with the finest white fabrics, solid authentic polished timber furniture and floors. The spacious bedrooms, dual personal vanities and private outdoors showers, were distracting although yet again our eyes are drawn to the big blue outside.
The culinary offering on Likuliku is sensational and it’s a fine dining experience for breakfast, lunch and dinner with the freshest ingredients picked daily from the resort’s extensive vegetable garden. Executive Chef Ihaka Peri and his team create exquisite flavours from the Pacific Rim in Fijiana Restaurant – the Resort’s centerpiece with views over the lagoon, gardens and pool. The dining concept changes daily with a mini-Degustation style for lunch and dinner, combined with a variety of themed evenings showcasing local and cultural elements. The atmosphere is casual and new friends are made amongst staff and guests. If you’re only interested in privacy then the resort caters for all personalities with private dining settings and romance on tap.
Lazy days with ‘that book’ and siestas are mixed with fun-filled snorkelling with a myriad of sea life, kayaking, stand-up paddle boarding, or just enjoying our beautiful bure. Or visit the “Tatadra Spa” for a unique Fiji experience and further relaxation. A real highlight of our stay was an exhilarating speed boat ride around neighbouring islands en-route to Modriki Island, where the movie Cast Away was filmed, starring Tom Hanks and his mate Wilson. Words actually can’t describe just how beautiful this part of the world is. You can say the same about Likuliku – it is a remarkably special place and should be on top of your list.
