Kundiman Market, Karawari River, Papua New Guinea

The Karawari River is one of the wildest places in the world, and this tiny market, open for business in the early morning weekend hours, offers a glimpse at life on the river in its most authentic state. Most families here engage in subsistence fishing or farming, and trade and barter for what food, goods and services they need. On the trading block here are fish and regional produce, clothing, machine parts, and assorted bric-a-brac often hauled in from bigger cities many hundreds or thousands of miles away – across some of the world’s most rugged terrain. Community unity is prized above all else, so each day at the market feels like time spent among family and friends.
