1. You can find fairies
Trentham Gardens is home to the world-famous wire sculpture fairies who have captured the imagination of art fanatics and Instagrammers from around the world. It’s every little child’s fantasy: to find fairies living in the garden. All up, there are 15 fairies hiding around the sprawling estate, each one totally unique in style and character and pose. The fairies are created from galvanised wire by local artist Robin Wight. His daughter Amy Wight, created the garden’s giant dandelions.

2. Mooch around a meadow
Immerse yourself in vast, magical drifts of meadows and rivers of colourful grass planted by world-class designers. The newly introduced annual and perennial meadows are designed by Professor Nigel Dunnett. The meadows have introduced a contemporary understory to Capability Brown’s newly revealed landscape. The main annual meadow stretches 21,000 sq. m, and connects Trentham Lake with Brown’s historic parkland.

3. Ramble around the romantic ruins
History and heritage can be found around every turn at Trentham Gardens. From the Capability Brown-designed lake to the remains of the ancestral seat of the Dukes of Sutherland. The real romance of the estate can be felt in the northern-most part of the Eastern Pleasure Ground where you will find the remains of Trentham Hall, which includes the sculpture gallery and clock tower. Once one of England’s grandest country houses, the wisteria-covered ruins continue to age gracefully.

4. Uncover Italianate grandeur
Although you’re in the English Midlands, it feels like you’ve arrive in Rome. The gardens are surrounded by Italianate grandeur with the only copy of sculptor Benvenuto Cellini’s original 1550s statue, Perseus, dominating the view of the impressive Italian Gardens. The gardens, located near Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, tend toward the flamboyant and are punctuated with paths that break up the spread of lawn and encourage visitors to wander around the garden lawn, unrolled in a verdant carpet.

5. Picnic in the pleasure grounds
No matter how busy the day, there’s always a quiet contemplative patch of grass inviting visitors to sit back, relax and return to nature. BYO rug and find a spot to listen to the soundtrack of chirping birds.  Trentham Gardens retains the charm it had in the 19th century while honouring the fine aesthetic judgment of Capability Brown. Today’s team of award-winning landscape architects pursue Brown’s vision for magnificence and then soften it with a human element. Spot the deer dashing through the ancient woodlands while contemplating that career change into horticulture.  trentham.co.uk
