It’s been an extraordinary ten years for the global luxury hotel sector, with exciting new developments and investments popping up year by year. Some have offered completely unique experiences, such as Australia’s first underwater hotel that opened this month, while others have pushed the envelope in design and luxury. We’ve also seen an increase in the number of environmentally-friendly and wellbeing resorts catering to more conscious travellers.
However, of all the new luxury resorts that opened in the past decade, some that stood out more than the rest. Luxury resort Soneva Jani in the Maldives was among those voted as the ‘Decade’s Best New Luxury Hotel’ by LTI – Luxury Travel Intelligence.
Inspired by a word that means ‘wisdom’ in Sanskrit, Soneva Jani encompasses a collection of water villas and island sanctuaries. Set within a lagoon of crystal clear waters, it is fringed by pristine beaches and blanketed in lush tropical greenery.
The highlight of the islands that the resort calls home is the 5.6-kilometre private lagoon that surrounds it; an awe-inspiring azure spectacle that inspires a sense of calm.
The villas offer uninterrupted ocean views and a luxurious castaway experience thanks to the beautiful designs and ultimate privacy.
The decision was made by a team of 12 experienced and passionate researchers across the world who, after thorough consideration, determined ‘the perfect ten’.
According to LTI – Luxury Travel Intelligence, the resorts that made the top ten ‘best of the decade’ were all so outstanding that they could not possibly be ranked against each other.

‘The team at LTI is totally submerged in every aspect of luxury travel every day, yet even we are continually surprised and occasionally speechless at the level of excellence we find at particular properties,” commented Michael Crompton, founder of LTI.
“Of course this makes an exercise such as this even more difficult to call, but having visited all of these exceptional properties, some several times, we are confident that of all the great new hotels and resorts we have seen over the past ten years, this is, without doubt, the perfect ten,” Michael concluded.
