The Taj Mahal is one of the most recognised buildings in the world, with an ivory-white exterior that glows with an ethereal beauty. One of the new Seven Wonders of the World and a UNESCO World Heritage site, the Taj Mahal, in Agra in northern India’s Uttar Pradesh state, was commissioned by Mughal emperor Shah Jahan as a tribute to his wife after she died.
Construction began on the Taj Mahal in 1631 and took 22 years to complete. The Taj Mahal is just one of many highlights included on Abercrombie and Kent’s ‘Taj Mahal and the Treasures of India’ tour, a small group journey that offers visits to this iconic site at both sunrise and sunset.
Other highlights include a private safari in Panna National Park – home to Bengal tigers, stays in former palaces like the Taj Lake Palace and Rambagh Palace, a private sunset cruise on Lake Udaipur, and in Varanasi, a city with more than a thousand temples and shrines, guests can witness an ‘Aarti’ ceremony by the Ganges.
