With high-class service, scenic views and a smooth mode of transport, travelling Australia by rail has become quite a sought-after and glamorous experience.
Now Australia has an all-new rail journey, the Great Southern, travelling between Adelaide and Brisbane. The Great Southern made its inaugural departure on Friday 6 December.
The new route, which spans the coast between the two cities, provides guests with the chance to explore the rugged coastline and sun-kissed beaches of the south-eastern corner of the country in a whole new way.
Launched by Journey Beyond Rail Expedition, Great Southern is Australia’s first new great rail journey in ten years. It’s the latest addition to the suite of internationally renowned journeys including The Ghan (Adelaide-Darwin) and Indian Pacific (Sydney-Perth).
The Great Southern itineraries
The Great Southern will operate limited departures over December 2019 and January 2020. Guests can book a premium rail experience inclusive of all meals, beverages and unique off-train excursions.
Travellers can choose to do a two-night, three-day northbound journey which includes excursions in the Grampians, Australia’s capital city of Canberra, and the New South Wales north coast before arriving into Brisbane.
Or, a three-night, four-day southbound journey featuring stops in New South Wales’ north coast, the expansive wine region of Hunter Valley and nearby Newcastle. As well as the iconic Great Ocean Road and regional Victoria before arriving into Adelaide.
“Great Southern’s array of excursions will allow guests to truly explore beyond the tracks and be immersed in the towns, cities and landscapes the train passes through,” said Luke Walker, chief operating officer for Journey Beyond.
According to Luke, guests should expect exceptional service and regionally inspired and carefully curated menus.
Comprising of 28 carriages and two locomotives, The Great Southern can accommodate up to 232 guests. Accommodation ranges from Platinum and Gold Service cabins.
The motif for this train is an eastern grey kangaroo. The unique Australian marsupial is typically found in the areas the train will travel through. Meanwhile, it’s ‘Brilliant Orange’ colour is representative of the Australian summer months in which it travels.
Fares start from $1779 per person for Gold Single accommodation; $1869 per person for Gold Twin and $3999 per person for Platinum. Last cabins are available for the inaugural season with bookings also open for the 2020/21 summer.
