Bernie Dieter’s Club Kabarett is back in Sydney!

With fire-eaters, contortionists, aerial performers and more, Bernie Dieter’s menagerie of mischief-makers returns to Sydney after a successful stint on London’s West End.

German cabaret and performance artist Bernie Dieter is known for her unique punk cabaret brand, risque humour and songwriting. Self-described as a cross between “Lady Gaga, Marlene Dietrich and Frank-N-Furter in sequins”, Dieter has performed for sold-out audiences in London’s West End, hosted Olivier Award-winning variety show La Clique at Melbourne Art Centre and headlined BBC’s Live at the Electric television show. However, Dieter is perhaps best known for her variety shows Little Death Club, Berlin Underground and Club Kabarett, which have toured Europe, Sydney, London, Singapore, Perth and Edinburgh.

From 29 May to 28 July 2024, Bernie Dieter’s Club Kabarett returns to Sydney Spiegeltent at Moore Park Entertainment Quarter. Blasting an atmospheric blend of covers and original songs while a dazzling display of hair-hanging, fire-breathing, aerials and toe-curling contortionists take to the stage, this is a circus strictly for adults.

What to expect at Bernie Dieter’s Club Kabarett

Ticketholders begin their night out at the Parlour alfresco garden bar for pre-show drinks, with a selection of wine, beer and spirits on offer. Guests are then ushered into the Spiegeltent a short while before showtime with seating allocated on a first come, first served basis – so join the queue early! Inside, expect the cabaret aesthetic of yesteryear, with velvet-upholstered booths, timber detailing and mirrored columns beneath a canopy of red and gold. Seating is tiered so everyone gets a fantastic view, and the stage dominates the centre of the tent. Cast members mingle with the audience to set the mood for the evening’s festivities.

Showtime

Bernie Dieter opens the show with an electrifying vocal performance, then warms up the crowd with salacious humour fuelled by audience participation. The performers are scantily clad in wild costumes – sequins, buckles, fishnets and patent leather heels are a recurring theme. Once it starts, this show doesn’t stop, with performers hitting the stage one right after the other. All the while, the band delivers a tight performance and dramatic soundtrack for each instalment.

Meet the cast of Bernie Dieter’s Club Kabarett

Reuben Helfenbaum defied gravity with his hand balance acrobatics and whip-cracking precision, while Blue Phoenix delivered stylised acrobatics from a suspended pole and Joe Keeley’s aerial gymnastics appeared to outsmart the laws of physics. Lisa Lottie demonstrated incredible coordination and flexibility juggling countless hula hoops, at one point rotating hoops on her arms, neck, legs and body while performing twists, tricks and flips.

Contortionist Soliana Ersie emerged from a costume box to shock and delight the audience, arranging her limbs into impossible positions while executing effortless back flips. And while Bella Diosa’s fire-eating, flame-throwing opener was an entertaining and sensual performance, it was her hair-hanging that truly captivated the audience. Suspended from the ceiling by nothing but a hook woven into her hair, Diosa completed aerial swings, twirls and pirouettes that saw her body spin at unbelievable speeds. A show-stopper, indeed.
