Surf’s up at Bali’s Mamaka by Ovolo
Quiksilver Bali Surf Academy will be positioned within the resort and offer surf lessons on Kuta Beach. The Academy will run beginner level lessons, group or private sessions, offer surfboard rentals and ‘surfari’ boat trips. While Mamaka by Ovolo acts as the optimum place to relax after a day navigating the water breaks.
Mamaka By Ovolo is Bali’s first urban hotel and all about the good vibrations. The Bali resort attracts modern travellers, social surfers and foodies, making it the ideal Bali surf and sleep stay over. It features 191 playfully designed rooms and suites, with five unique ranges to choose from – it’s retro aesthetic is as bright and bold as the Bali sunshine.

Surf runs in the family
Quiksilver Bali Surf Academy is locally owned and family-operated by Made Switra and his Australian wife Holly Monkman. Together they have a wealth of surf knowledge and experience of the Bali breaks. One of Bali’s most legendary surfing pioneers, Made has travelled the world and surfed as a sponsored Quiksilver team rider. And to top that, he made the history books as the first Balinese surfer to ride the famed Pipeline break in Hawaii. The surf lineage runs deep in the family. Made’s grandfather was the first person to create handmade, wooden surfboards in Bali. And Holly has her own stellar background first as a professional surfer before working with world tour level surfer champions.
Did you know…
Surfing was first introduced in Bali by an American couple, Bob and Louis Koke. They arrived on the island in the 1930s with Bob, an avid surfer who had spent time in Hawaii, the first person to surf the waves of Kuta Beach. He taught some of the locals to surf, which sparked the beginning of the island’s long and unique surf heritage. And the rest is history.
