Alila Hotels & Resorts has restored a 230-year old defensive fortress in Jaipur, India, which will open as Alila Fort Bishangarh in February 2017.
Nestled into the Arvalli hills in Rajasthan, the historic warrior fort has undergone an extensive, seven-year long restoration project, transforming it into a unique, world-class 59-suite heritage resort.
Sitting up high on a granite hill with a small village at its base, the fort has a commanding presence and overlooks 360-degree views of the stunning Rajasthani landscape, surrounded by hills and dotted with havelis, villages and temples.
The restoration project grew out of a love for the heritage of the building and the surrounding landscape, with sustainability as a core commitment. The original fort has been left intact, while the new, modern-day residential areas have been carefully constructed above and outside the old fort, housing four different categories of suites.
Each suite has been custom designed to make the most of the stunning views from the large bay windows, which can be opened, with all rooms complete with all the modern conveniences such as expansive bathrooms, luxurious furnishings, large day-beds, LCD TV, WiFi access, and more.
The structure is fortified by two-metre thick stone walls and majestic turrets with elegant arched windows and intricate jaali screens, fusing traditional materials in a contemporary way and showcasing a perfect example of the Jaipur Gharana architecture.
There are four specialty theme restaurants including an all-day dining restaurant, an alfresco venue with spectacular views, a bar, cigar room and wine cellar, and a champagne bar, coffee and tea lounge.
Other facilities and public spaces include the beautiful arrival courtyard, luxurious banquet lawns, swimming pool, pool terrace and juice bar, gym, ‘Play Alila’ kids club, a library, Spa Alila wellness centre and Alila Living boutique.
Just an hour’s drive from Jaipur and three hours’ from New Delhi, Alila Fort Bishangarh is ideally located to explore the charm and beauty of rural Rajasthan and Alila experiences offer a range of immersive cultural experiences from day visits to historic places and interaction with local Rajasthani communities, to outdoor adventures, traditional cooking masterclasses and pampering and wellness.
