Inside the property that won Airbnb’s ‘Most Unique Stay’

Gawthorne’s Hut in Mudgee NSW has been awarded Australia’s ‘Most Unique Stay’ by Airbnb and it’s easy to see why.

A few years ago property owners Rick and Steph teamed up with their architect Cameron Anderson to create a luxurious off-grid escape.

The result is a unique triangular-frame accomodation set in Mudgee’s serene countryside.

Take a look inside

While the exterior will captivate your attention, the interior will hold it.

“All the ceilings and walls are hardwood lined and that gives it a point of difference and more of an eco feel,” Rick explains.

Polished concrete slabs and copper piping also add to the unique Airbnb’s contemporary finish.

Airbnb’s most unique stay was purpose built as an off-grid short-term accomodation.

“It doesn’t have televisions for that purpose. We wanted people to get away from everything and relax,” Steph says.

The site of the stay is key to its seclusion. Rick and Steph describe it as far enough away to see your neighbours but not to run into them.

For those who don’t have their hearts set on an isolated getaway, Rick and Steph also give guests an opportunity to see the farm.

“We try and make it more of a total experience being here. We offer guests a tour and will take them to a spot up high in the back of their property where they can watch the sunset,” Rick says.

The owners of Airbnb’s ‘Most Unique Stay’ also place high importance on using local suppliers.

“Cameron is our local architect, we used a local builder. A local timber craftsman made the timber benches in the kitchen and bathroom. Whatever we could source locally, we did to support our community who in turn support us.”

But wait there’s more

If you can’t manage to book a stay at Gawthorne’s Hut do not fear. Rick and Steph have two other stays on the property that have just as much wow factor.

Tom’s Cottage features a large north-facing deck with country views to Mount Buckaroo. You can lounge in the sun by day and stargaze at night by the fire pit.

The couple also transformed Wilgowrah Church into a fully-equipped stay that packs luxury and history into one.
